PHMSA TQ Emergency Virtual Instructor-Led Training (VILT)
When the COVID-19 crisis forced the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration's Training and Qualifications Center (TQ), which prepares the nation's pipeline inspectors to conduct pipeline safety inspections, to move their typically in-person training events to virtual delivery, it required instructors to re-skill quickly.
By utilizing the training platform designated to train pipeline inspectors to also re-skill the TQ instructors, our professional trainers were able to "lead by example" to demonstrate not just Blackboard Collaborate technology, but also facilitation skills, student engagement methods, and more needed for virtual course delivery.
Many of TQ's in-person courses include hands-on field inspection exercises, so for the emergency VILT courses, we also produced videos in which instructors demonstrated operator activities so students could perform virtual inspections. Additional videos are used to demonstrate pipeline components and operations.
